He has bagged the top prizes in many songwriting contests, among which are the 1st, 3rd and 5th Venerable Master Hsin Yun Songwriting Contest held in Taiwan, the Dream Songwriting Competition conducted by ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation (his song entitled “Not Today” featured in the hit television show Pinoy Dream Academy), and the highly prestigious Cebu Popular Music Festival, wherein he garnered both the Grand and Second Prizes for his songs “Pasaylo-a Ako” and “Bisan Pa” all in the same year.

His professional songwriting career made a remarkable debut in 2006 when five of his songs were recorded by no less than Mr. “Pure Energy” Gary Valenciano, and released in his album “Relevance” under Universal Records, his song “Wait Forever” being the carrier single of the album. The second single of the album, “In Another Lifetime,” likewise became the theme song of the movie “Eternity,” produced and released under GMA Films. Last 2007, the same track bagged for him his first Awit Award, winning in the Best Ballad category. Since then, many his songs have been recorded by some of the country’s top entertainers, among which are Ariel Rivera, Piolo Pascual, Toni Gonzaga, Chad Peralta and more currently, KC Concepcion, the hit single “Imposible” currently enjoying popular airplay.

His body of work likewise includes musicals (Siddhartha, Zephyrin, Song Of Bernadette, etc.), product/event jingles (Casino Rubbing Alcohol, Happy Booster Hotdogs, the Mantawi Festival Theme Song, etc.), and even wedding songs (he composed for Raki Vega’s wedding just this September).

Currently, he continues to write and produce songs for a number of OPM artists while giving songwriting and creative thinking workshops on the side.

IAN ZAFRA

Ian is a civil engineer whose true passion lies not in figuring the compression strength of cement, nor conducting tension testing for reinforcement bars, but in the composition, arrangement and writing of music — the very song of the spheres.

His achievements became inspiration for later generations of musicians to forge ahead and stay true to their passion and creativity. Such achievements include:

a) producing 4 albums for his band, Sheila and the Insects, and collaboration with other artists like Missing Filemon, Disco Assasins, Love Satellites, and Happy Days;

b) inspiring and developing a hunger for original composition as a resource person for ECPAT Philippines’ songwriting workshop in 2002, the resulting songs being performed in the first Children’s POP ECPAT Philippines and speaker in musical arrangement in the 2007 Blangkong Papel song writing workshop;

c) earning kudos from the music industry by winning Guitarist of the Year in the 2001 SMB Music Awards, and being awarded the Young Music Entrepreneur in 2005 by the British Council of the Philippines;

And his grandest work, yet:

d) Midweek sessions — conceived in may 2000, this live music program is one of the few well-respected long-running stages for local music. It has inspired and encouraged countless Cebuano musicians to create and perform original materials, and continues to do so at The Outpost bar.

From playing the bass for many known Local Bands here in Cebu since 1999 such as PG18, ANINO, Sparc7, Attack of the Giant Fetus, Chained and CATTSKI (where the band has released 3 albums already), His love for music has evolved through the years. Since 2006, he is one of the Recording and Mixing engineers for ZZUBU recording and does free lance recordings for other studios here in Cebu and in Bohol as well. In 2007, he partnered with another respected musician here in Cebu as they open their own mixing studio in 1318 Banawa.

As 2009 opens more doors to the music scene in Cebu, He is also currently the Partner Managing Director of Kalye Musika. A group that aims to provide the Marketing support and avenues needed for Local talents.

His dedication to his art has earned him the SAN MIGUEL CEBU MUSIC AWARDS Year 2000 Bassist of the Year, as well as Year 2001 Bassist of the Year.

After having been given the opportunity to Co-produce the CATTSKI 3rd album: “SOUND MINDS SPEAK VOLUMES” in 2009 with Cattski Espina, the album has been given many positive reviews that has allowed him to once more co-produce up-coming albums of other bands.

We’re organizing a songwriting seminar-workshop to raise funds for TSINELAS. It’s going to be held this coming May. It’s going to be a four-day (two weekends) event to be held at the Tsinelas headquarters at the Saint Theresa’s College compound along Gen.
We’re going to talk about the basics of melody writing, lyrics writing, musical arrangement and recording.

Award-winning musicians and recording artists Ian Zafra, Jude Gitamondoc and Brian Sacro have initially agreed to join us as speakers. I also invited myself as speaker, and myself said yes (haha).

We’ll be inviting other established musicians to join us as interactors during the open forums.

Anybody can join the workshop as long as he brings with him an original composition – in Bisaya, Tagalog, Cebuano and in whatever genre.

As a bonus, we might – i repeat, we might – choose a song or two from among the entries to be recorded for free.

Number of participants is limited to 25. You can’t learn anything in a crowd.

The workshop is not for free. We need to spend for the seminar kits and honorarium for speakers. Not a centavo will go to the pockets of the organizers. Proceeds will be used to fund various projects of Tsinelas, especially since another school year is opening.

We’ll soon be posting more details.

Join. Not only you will learn a lot from the workshop, you will also get the chance to help poor kids stay in school.

Rakenrol, Bisayang musikero!
