WHILE sorting donated books to be put on sale for a charity event called Their Books last week, I felt I had to post the following advisory in our event’s Facebook page:

Their Books would like to advise donors to make sure no personal documents are included in their donations. Their Books has found diaries, planners, photo albums and similar items carrying information about the owners’ finances, family woes and failed relationships. Although grieving over the death of a pet dog and having a jerk for a boyfriend are a universal experience, some people might find other uses of these pieces of personal information.

Their Books vows to help the owners of the information cope with the pain by burning the evidence. But with the volume of donations we’re receiving, it’s not impossible some love letters tucked between the pages will slip undetected and find their way to the shelves. For that we don’t want to be held responsible. At the end of the day, it’s all about the love of the written word and nothing more.

Earlier that day, fellow Sun.Star Cebu editor and columnist Mike Limpag handed me a diary he had found among the books deposited by a donor at the gate of our office building. Mike, a Their Books supporter, was protective enough of a fellow book lover to salvage the diary from the pile of Jane Austens and Julie Garwoods. The item—old, dusty and beaten—contained private information, some so painful even a stranger like me cried copious tears while reading an entry about the owner’s unmet cravings for sundae and French fries.

The next hours saw me commiserating with a single mother who had poured all her pain and anguish unto McDonald paper napkins and tucked them in the pages of her beloved romance novels. The scribbling was so heart-wrenching that for a while I saw tears when there were only ketchup stains.

Mike’s discovery had me scanning the pages of the other books piling up in my work station at the newsroom to check if their donors had not inadvertently left juicy clues about their private lives in between the pages. Most of these books were donated by people who just want to share their love for the written word with fellow book lovers and help raise funds for charity. The least I can do to repay their generosity is to make sure their grocery lists and unpaid bills don’t end up in other people’s bookshelves.

There was a ticket stub to a Pilita Corrales concert at the Cebu Coliseum; an estampita of Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, the patron saint of teachers; a rose petal flattened by time; a plane ticket to Cebu in which the passenger scribbled in bold red “Goodbye Caloocan;” a bus ticket to Santander, Cebu; a doctor’s prescription for painkillers; a photo of Christine Reyes in a pocket calendar; a pink handkerchief with the word “forever;” a stick of Pall Mall; and many other items that speak volumes about their owners.

It’s amazing how a book can be a witness to one mother’s dreams of a better world for her family. In the margins of a book on motherhood, the reader poured out her love for her son: “Finally, a bicycle for you this summer, my little boy.” And in the margins of the next chapter she wrote, “Daddy, this year’s going to be better.” I was relieved the donor didn’t write her name in the book. It made it to the book sale.

We receive hundreds of books for Their Books. And as I warned, we can’t be hundred percent sure we can remove all love letters hidden between the pages.

But at one point, it got us thinking, is all this screening necessary? If the owners of these books cared about their ugly fights with their lovers so much as to document these in paper napkins, why hide them in books that they know they would be giving away in the future?

Books and book lovers never cease to intrigue us. See you in the next book sale.

You should have seen how fellow columnists Januar Yap and Michelle So reacted to the question. “What the ef are you talking about, you good for nothing @*^#!!!_++? No one can make me part with my books, even if you happen to write an irrelevant column every Tuesday.”

OK, they were not freaking mad, actually. We’re good friends. We take care of each other when we’re drunk. We check out each other’s column to make sure there are at least two people in the world who read us every week. What they gave me was a look of professional concern, like a doctor to a terminally ill patient.

“Here, darling, I’ll listen. Everything will be fine,” Michelle said. “Yeah, you want beer, buddy?” Januar said.

So I talked: Imagine I’m an avid reader of yours, I told them, a rabid fanatic. I want to know more about you because you’re my idol and I’m your stalker. What better way to do that than by reading the books you read? These books helped you become what you are now, incurable insomniacs. They are privy to your evil thoughts, they keep you company in the toilet, they lie next to your dirty underwear when the laundrywoman is sick for days. I want to read them too because I want to be like you.

Now, imagine you put those books on sale. I, your fan, will gobble them up like pizza. Got the picture already? Good. Now, imagine all of Cebu’s prominent writers, columnists, journalists, poets, painters, musicians throwing in some of their books too, each of these people has his own loyal following, you know. It’s going to be one hell of a book festival!

And where will the money go? The NGO I’m active in called Tsinelas is putting up a free art school for kids from the city’s slums. That’s where the money goes.

This is big, I tell you. You won’t believe me, but Isolde Amante is in (and man, you should check out the titles she’s donating. I won’t give them away if they were mine). We have Erma Cuizon, Raymund Fernandez, Leo Lastimosa, Bambi Beltran; and take this: Haide Acuña is donating a complete set of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Want more? We got Mayet Tabada, that’s like nailing down five writers in one. And we got Alex Uypuangco, Karl Roque, Ritchie Quijano, Noel Villaflor, Chai Fonacier, Vince Cinches, Josua Cabrera, Publio Briones, Elizabeth Baumgart, Vera Leigh Lasam, Alex Badayos…

Alex who? Badayos. The chief photographer. I told him that if he still keeps his Playboy 1970 Collector Series, and he survived a mauling attack in Bogo City last year, then that should say something about his staying power in the media.

And just yesterday, Erma Cuizon informed me that the Women in Literary Arts (WILA)-Cebu is in! If you think I’m making this up, check out the list at tsinelasdiaries.wordpress.com. It’s growing as we speak.

When’s this going to be held and where? We’re negotiating with the malls here to give us a space for at least one day next month. Do you know they have this thing called Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)? We’re appealing to their sense of CSR on this one. Surely they won’t refuse something that will fund a free art school for rugby kids, will they? The event, by the way, is called “Their Books.”

Hmmm… Their Books, cute. And you? Me? Well, I’m throwing in my prayer booklets from the seminary… Hey, that says something about me too. It’s not that…. OK, my Mills and Boon romances will have to go…

“Shut up Lorenzo, I’m in,” Michelle said. “Yeah, me too, buddy,” Januar said.

What title would you want for that book you're writing right now? If that's the one about a groom who chickened out in the middle of his wedding to run off with his lover, you may want to call it "Dealing with Acute Diarrhea at Weddings Like Nothing Happened." The book is sure to be a literary disaster, but at least it will make it to "The World's Oddest Book Titles" list.

About the book in the picture:

The Fuchsia Is Now, by J. Otto Seibold, leads off MotherReader’s new feature, “Weird-Ass Picture Book of the Month.” J. Otto Seibold is no stranger to odd picture books. In fact, he may be called a reigning king. But this particular book hits a new high in both story and illustrations, and thus earns itself the honored title of Weird-Ass Picture Book of the Month.

Fuchsia is a little fuchsia girl who makes a wish on her birthday cake for her wish to come true. Which begs the question of how much wish can a Fuchsia wish if a Fuchsia could wish… anyway. She opens her present and finds a hat that makes her head look like a baby bottle or a… umm, condom. Then she decides to put a flower on her hat to make it look fancy and poof! A fairy pops out! The fairy poofs her some strange new friends, some with condom caps as well. It’s a new trend. They all play until nighttime and Fuchsia learns that she can bring them all back again by saying, “THE FUCHSIA IS NOW.”
