EVERYTIME Mr. Ryan Cayabyab opens his mouth, the country’s music buffs listen. They know that if they don’t, there’s no more reason left to respect each other.
“Hey, we just snubbed Ryan Cayabyab. Now let’s snub Levi Celerio, too, and Jose Mari Chan, and Rey Valera.” And so on, and so forth, until the younger generation follows suit and murders Ely Buendia, Vennie Saturno, Ogie Alcasid and Rico Blanco, in that order. It’s going to be the Stupid Noontime Show of the Philippine music industry. Imagine listening to Lito Camo songs all your life.
Toyang from outside the wall
Monday, September 1st, 2008I was cleaning the toilet bowls of the San Carlos Seminary College in Mabolo, Cebu City in 1993 when I heard a song by the Eraserheads for the first time. The music came from a house just outside the seminary’s west wall, from a room where the owner’s daughter would sometimes treat us seminarians to long-distance striptease at night.
I froze, a bottle of muriatic acid in one hand and a toilet bowl swab in the other. Who was this guy warbling about his house being small yet clean, pati sa kusina? And what was my favorite childhood rhyme “pen pen de sarapin de kutsilyo de almasin” doing in the song? What decent songwriter would use Skyflakes and Coke 500 in his lyrics? And what guts to base his song on Nat King Cole’s “Too Young.”

Every time the Catholic Church launches its sporadic campaign against immorality, also known as “The Rene Josef Bullecer Crusade,” I’m reminded of a feature story I’ve been itching to write about: bikini bars. So when a few days ago Bullecer started exorcising congressmen of their reproductive health demons, I knew I had to start my research already.
The plan was to write an objective description of what goes on inside bikini bars at a time when the Bullecer crusade was condemning whores, pimps and T-backs as the devil’s creatures.

Mao ni ang nahitabo sa “3rd album.” Nakarecord na mig five (or was it six?) songs sa Zzubu Studios late 2006 and early last year. Nasud na tanang instrumento (except for some minor additions that I’m sure we would be having later on in the recording). Generally, akoang vocals nalang kuwang. Nalangay lang kay sige’g gigs (it was the time when the so-called “bisrock” was making it big in the Visayas and Mindanao areas). Also, I had yet to finish the lyrics of some of the songs.

Duha ka klase ang musikerong Pinoy karon – katong nagtabang pagpalambo sa lokal nga musika (bisaya, tagalog, ugbp) ug katong nanglawgaw lang ug nagduso niini paubos. Asa ka sa duha? Thanks to former Sun.Star colleague Aledel Gonzalez for emailing me about this article.
